The 1804 Fund
The 1804 Fund was established by the Ohio University Foundation Board of Trustees. The Fund supports the university's core mission of maintaining, strengthening, and enhancing a learning-centered community. Such a community values and develops the teaching, learning and research or scholarly activities of all its members. By its nature, the community promotes collaboration among units and interdisciplinary explorations and innovations. The 1804 Fund focuses its support on student and faculty learning through two fund categories:
- Undergraduate Learning
- Faculty Research & Graduate Studies
The awards seek to foster:
- A superior undergraduate experience.
- Integrating students into the full mission of the university (teaching, research, and service).
- Distinctiveness in graduate education.
- Excellence in research and scholarship.
- Competitiveness for external funding.
- Linking service and learning.
1. Undergraduate Learning
In addition to the Fund's overall goals, the Undergraduate Learning portion promotes curricular innovations, programs, and activities that enhance the undergraduate educational experience.
Examples include projects or programs that:
- Bring greater coherence to the general education curriculum.
- Pilot models that improve teaching and learning.
- Create learning communities to connect students with faculty.
- Involve undergraduates in research.
- Internationalize the content and perspective of courses and curricula.
- Develop service-learning courses.
- Use writing to further learning.
2. Faculty Research & Graduate Studies
In addition to the Fund's overall goals, the Faculty Research and Graduate Studies portion promotes research and scholarly activities and innovations in graduate education. Research activities make a investment in the research through purchases of instrumentation or hiring specialized personnel. Curricular proposals should foster innovations in graduate programs through demonstration or pilot projects.
Examples include projects or proposals that:
- Increase external support opportunities.
- Maximize the use of current facilities and enhance the research infrastructure.
- Integrate teaching and research training into the graduate curriculum.
Proposal Process
Ideas regarding funding requests must first be discussed with appropriate Chairs/Directors and Deans. Funding request ideas are then brought to either the Dean of University College (undergraduate proposals) or Vice President for Research (faculty research and graduate studies proposals) before being fully developed. The goals of the discussions are to assist in the refinement of proposal ideas and to identify issues that should be addressed prior to final proposal submission. These preliminary discussions must take place by March 15 annually. Forms and guidelines for submissions will be provided at the meeting with the University College Dean or Vice President.
Potential applicants whose ideas include both areas of focus meet with either the Dean or Vice President. Guidelines for dual submissions will be provided.
Proposals must be submitted to the Dean of University College, 140 Chubb Hall, or Vice President for Research, 120 RTEC, by April 15 annually.
Final decisions about funding are made by the Ohio University Foundation Board of Trustees in July.
