In the spring of 2012, it was announced that Nancy Cartwright—voice of Bart Simpson on FOX’s “The Simpsons”—would be coming to campus to give the Commencement address for the Class of 2012. After general inquiry from UCM on Ms. Cartwright’s availability for a video interview while on campus, her manager asked about our ability to do a longer form documentary. UCM was given full control of creative aspects, with final approval from coming from Nancy and her team. The crew was able to spend three days with Nancy in Athens and Dayton, Ohio. The resulting documentary was a resounding success and has been screened in three major film festivals.
Time differences caused problems with communication initially. However, we were ultimately able to work out a schedule and connect via phone and e-mail.
Initially, UCM’s director/producer also faced some challenges in using an all-student crew. There was much organizing and communication needed to recruit a student crew with a limited budget. Lots of training and meeting sessions would be needed to make sure everyone was ready to work as a team. Another challenge was coordinating the schedules of five student assistant editors working on the project—who still needed to attend classes in order to continue their degree work at the University.
The client was very happy to have a student-based crew working on the project under the supervision of UCM professional staff. Their trust in us contributed significantly to the project’s success.
UCM also hired dedicated and talented students capable of doing great work. UCM’s director/producer regularly communicated with her crew and made expectations clear before shooting the documentary. In addition to the main documentary, the DVD that resulted from this project even evolved to include bonus features. This gave each student editor the opportunity to edit his/her own feature for the DVD, acting as a storyteller and choosing content. This led to the creation of several different, outstanding bonus features.
