Ohio University Voinovich School hosts 2nd annual state energy efficiency and emissions workshop

The Consortium for Energy, Economics & the Environment (CE3) at the Ohio University Voinovich School of Leadership and Public Affairs will be hosting its second annual workshop for Ohio businesses dedicated to the impacts of energy choices. The event, “A Workshop for Efficiency, Emissions and Energy Choices in Ohio,” will be held at 8 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 27, at the Quest Conference Center, 8405 Pulsar Place, Columbus, Ohio.

Building upon the state and federal momentum in energy efficiency, this one-day workshop will explore how efficiency measures can help Ohio’s small, medium and large businesses achieve their energy cost-savings and emissions goals.

U.S. Sen. Rob Portman (R-OH) will serve as the morning keynote speaker to address the progress made on the Energy Savings and Industrial Competitiveness Act he has co-sponsored with Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH). This bipartisan bill will help drive growth in the energy efficiency sector in Ohio and nationwide. Portman, a Cincinnati native, represented Ohio’s Second Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1993-2005.

"Through energy efficiency we can increase our industrial competitiveness on the world stage and strengthen our energy security for decades to come,” Portman said. “Washington can seem pretty divided these days, but we should be able to agree on making our economy more energy efficient. This bill is proof that good energy policy can be good economic policy as well. Our legislation has broad, bipartisan support from businesses, labor, energy, and environment advocates alike. It will cut costs for American companies while helping us make better use of our abundant domestic energy resources, will help to make our nation energy secure, and will cut our dependence on foreign energy resources."

Two concurrent workshop tracks will address the diversity of Ohio's energy resources and industries: 1) Efficiency & Emissions and 2) Shale Energy Emissions. The workshops will be hosted by additional expert speakers from Ohio-based companies, including Eaton Corporation, Honda North America, Kraton Performance Polymers, Inc., Owens Corning and others. They will present case studies on corporate energy efficiency projects and strategies, fugitive emissions and non-attainment, natural gas as a game changer in operations, Ohio’s emissions profile and reporting requirements for facilities, energy efficiency financing and more.

“Ohio has long been known for its traditional contributions, like coal, to Midwestern energy,” said Scott Miller, director of energy and environmental programs at the Voinovich School. “Shale is now center stage, but so are options like renewables and efficiency. Developing a diverse portfolio of energy in an environmentally-responsible way demonstrates the power and ingenuity of Ohio businesses. This workshop will showcase the innovative ways Ohio businesses are tackling energy and emissions in their operations.”

Through its successful Energy Webinar and Workshop Series, CE3 connects stakeholders in Ohio with useful information related to energy planning, energy usage and the environmental, economic and emissions-related impacts of energy.
