UCM transforms Ohio University achievements into stories, news releases, and social media posts with the power to shape perceptions near and far.
University Communications and Marketing delivers important messaging—including significant news and achievements—that enhances the sense of community within our institution and advances our University’s goals to audiences beyond OHIO’s six campuses.
These efforts are driven by two teams that administer our internal and external communications. An overview of these teams and services is provided below.
The UCM Internal Communications Team produces Compass, OHIO’s official news and information publication, and Compass Points, the need-to-know biweekly bulletin for faculty and staff.
The UCM Internal Communications Team also supports organizational and executive communications efforts for University academic support units and provides tools, techniques, training, strategies, and consulting for University academic unit communicators.
Our External Communications Team plays a key role in working with regional and national media as well as administering OHIO’s primary social media pages (Twitter and Facebook), giving our communication efforts a global reach. In addition to producing news releases and pitching stories that promote significant University achievements, the members of this team maintain an OHIO Expert Directory and serve as consultants and advisors for University faculty or staff members who may be contacted by external news organizations.
An important aspect of our mission is to collaborate in the process of making our campus community aware of emergencies that may affect the safety of students, faculty, and staff. UCM plays an important role in disseminating emergency announcements via messaging on the University’s front page at ohio.edu as well as more detailed information as it becomes available on the emergency information page.
Social media is not just a set of communication tools; it’s a completely different way of thinking about how we interact with each other. The External Communications Team administers the University’s primary Facebook and Twitter accounts, connecting OHIO with students, faculty, alumni, and friends around the world. These initiatives keep members of our academic community near and far up-to-date on important news and achievements as well as fun University events. The External Communications Team helps other University units launch their own Facebook and Twitter sites and serves as consultants on issues related to social media.
Can I send an e-mail to the entire University?
University-wide e-mails on specific topics are typically restricted to items deemed by the University administration to be of great importance or urgency to many members of the OHIO community. In most cases, members of our academic community are encouraged to submit items of interest to Compass, OHIO’s official news and information publication, for publication at the discretion of its editors. Compass headlines are also collected and distributed regularly to the University community in e-mails that feature summaries and clickable links for each highlighted story.
