Job Description

AAC Tutors are leaders and role-models. They serve in the Math Center, Science Center, and Peer Tutoring at the Academic Advancement Center in Alden 101. Tutors are not experts and do not replace time in the classroom or faculty office hours. Tutors engage students in discussions that help students clarify problems, help with test-prep, study skills, and time-management, and offer a variety of strategies to maintain academic success. Tutors are expected to continually work to reinforce knowledge of content, attend bi-annual training sessions, and actively utilize successful tutoring strategies to help students succeed. Tutors must work a minimum of 5 hours a week for the semester and can work up to 20 hours a week. Hours for Peer Tutoring  are not guaranteed. Academic dishonesty is not tolerated and will result in termination. 

 

Key Responsibilities - Academic

  1. Uphold our mission and maintain a professional and patient demeanor
  2. Create a positive learning environment and encourage independent learning by helping students identify problem areas and giving them opportunities to practice and build knowledge
  3. Maintain knowledge of subjects by reviewing content periodically
  4. Attend training sessions and participate in evaluation process to master tutoring techniques
  5. Maintain confidentiality as outlined in the FERPA Compliance Statement

 

Key Responsibilities - Administrative

  1. Utilize Tutor Trac to manage your schedule and appointments
  2. Communicate schedule changes, absences, lateness, concerns, and issues
  3. Uphold and communicate policies of the department
  4. Check email and Black Board to remain informed of activity at the AAC
  5. Submit accurate time sheets and enter hours in Work Force in a timely manner

 

Minimum Requirements

  • A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0
  • A "B" or higher in the course(s) you wish to tutor
  • Must have completed one semester of college level coursework at Ohio University
  • Currently enrolled at Ohio University
  • A willingness to help others and strong work ethic
  • Language tutors must submit recommendations from Modern Languages or Linguistics and have completed 2110 or 2120. Native speakers of a particular language must be approved by either Modern Languages or Linguistics.
