Systems back online after July 18 power outage
Electrical problem causes 7 hour down time for Data Center

July 19, 2010, 1:47am
By Sean O'Malley

Most OHIO systems are back online after a problem with electrical backup systems caused an unexpected shutdown of the university's data center.

At 6:26 pm on July 18, the Athens campus lost power during a severe thunderstorm.  The data center's battery backup absorbed the initial outage as designed; however, it was unable to switch over to the building's diesel generator.  As a result, all centrally hosted systems went down at 7:11 pm, when the battery backup's energy supply ran out.

Total downtime for most university services, including Blackboard and the OHIO front door website, was approximately seven hours.

As of 1:47 am, most university systems with the exception of SIS, e-mail and Guest Management were back online.  Both Exchange and Oak e-mail were restored around 4:00 am.  SIS production came back online at 5:50 am.
