CatMail rollout postponed
OIT sets sights on summer/fall

May 08, 2009

The May 13 kickoff of Ohio University's new e-mail system for students has been postponed.

Revised rollout dates are not yet available, but OIT expects to begin offering the Outlook Live-based service to at least some students during summer with complete conversion in the fall.  Additional information will be posted to the CatMail website as it becomes available.

The decision to postpone was a difficult one, said Chief Information Officer Brice Bible.  "We're really excited about the features CatMail has to offer our students.  But when you're talking about affecting 26,000 students' e-mail experience, you need to be absolutely certain the transition will be smooth."

According to Bible, the university's spam and virus filtering licenses are up for renewal in June, and a May transition would have allowed those costs to be reduced.  Unfortunately, that left the team with too little time to ensure a smooth transition.

"We'd rather take a little longer and make sure we roll this out right," Bible said.
