Dell Technology Day, December 9 in Baker 231

December 1, 2009 - Ohio University faculty and staff are invited to preview Dell's 2010 product lineup in Baker Center 231 on December 9, 2009.  This free event features a series of self-contained sessions from 8:30 am through 4:30 pm.  Individuals may attend as few or as many of the sessions as they like.  Continental breakfast and lunch will be served.

OIT investigates cause of 10/27 network outage

October 28, 2009 - Network engineers continue to analyze log files and system configurations in an effort to identify the cause of a university-wide data network outage between 8:49 pm and 12:40 am on October 27.

October 21, 2009 - Don't let an e-mail fool you into giving away personal information like your Oak password.  Be especially wary of messages asking you to 'confirm' your account information.

CatMail conversion complete, Exchange coming soon

October 12, 2009 - The university's move to the Microsoft-hosted CatMail for undergraduates and alumni now is complete.  On October 12, 2009 OIT staff began the automatic process to convert the approximately 3,500 remaining undergraduate and alumni Oak accounts to the new system.

Graduate students, faculty and staff will remain on Oak for the time being while OIT configures and tests a new, locally hosted Microsoft Exchange environment.

Faculty Commons to offer course design studio

October 9, 2009 - The Faculty Commons currently is accepting applications for an intensive Course Design Studio to be conducted from December 7-11, 2009.  The Studio is intended to provide participants with a tangible and implementable outcome.  During the week, participants will be provided assistance and resources (as available) to design or re-design a course or part of a course.  20 slots are available.

Faculty needed for Blackboard 9 pilot

October 01, 2009 - In preparation for a university-wide roll out of Blackboard 9 in 2010, OIT is seeking faculty to help pilot the new version during Winter quarter.  Faculty interested in applying should visit the Blackboard 9 pilot recruiting site before October 16, 2009.

New e-mail systems in the works

September 10, 2009 - E-mail at Ohio University will get a major face lift and performance boost during 2009-10 as the university replaces its home grown Oak e-mail system with Microsoft's Exchange and Outlook Live services.

OIT prepares for "Year of Change"

September 9, 2009 - During the coming academic year, the university will see multiple IT-related improvements, including two new e-mail systems, a new calendaring system, and a new version of Blackboard.  The Rufus Initiative will reach out to faculty, staff and students to help refine the university’s new SIS, while the NextGen Network upgrade will begin bringing faster network speeds to the desktop.  Finally, OIT itself will change, as the university implements President McDavis’ August 17, 2009 directive to consolidate all university-wide servers, enterprise applications, data networks and security under OIT.

Quick OIT response gets Clippinger back online after water leak

June 11, 2009  On the morning of June 9, though, a boiler room water leak inundated three of OIT's communications closets in Clippinger Hall.  The flood destroyed four network switches and three UPS units, leaving half the building without wired or wireless Internet access.  A few individuals also lost wired telephone service during the incident.

Classroom of the Future Expo: June 10, 2009

June 1, 2009 - Faculty, staff and students from across Southeast Ohio are invited to attend the first Classroom of the Future Expo hosted by OHIO's Office of Information Technology on June 10, 2009.  The expo will feature nearly 8000 square feet of exhibitor space, a general session and at least six "best practices" presentations.

VMware seminar draws participants from across region

May 14, 2009 - To encourage schools throughout the region to make the best use of a recently signed, statewide agreement with VMware.com, OIT hosted a one-day virtualization seminar on May 14, 2009.  Participants included Marietta College, OARnet, Washington State Community College, and the Athens City School District.

193 attend open forums on network and SIS

May 12, 2009 - 193 students, faculty and staff participated in two NextGen network and SIS replacement project forums.  The May 5 forum drew 60 in person at Baker Center, while an additional 30 participated via the interactive stream. On May 12, 79 attended in person with 24 on the stream.

Town hall meetings scheduled to discuss tech fee

April 28, 2009 - The Office of Information Technology will be hosting two technology fee related town hall meetings in Baker Center.  The meetings will take place on May 5 at 4:00 pm and May 12 at 12:00 pm. An interactive stream will be available as well.

April 24, 2009 - To help understand what features would be most useful on the university's wired telephone system, students, faculty and staff are invited to complete a short online survey.

CIO discusses IT plans with Administrative Senate

March 17, 2009 - Ohio University will continue to see major IT improvements in the coming year, despite the Office of Information Technology's $1.6 million budget cut.  In remarks at an Administrative Senate brown bag seminar, chief information officer Brice Bible stated that plans to consolidate IT across the university, replace the university's aging student information system, and integrate the university's e-mail/calendaring environments remain on track.

OIT offers free labor for Gateway warranty holders

February 6, 2009 - Although Gateway/MPC stopped honoring warranties in the wake of its November 6, 2008 bankruptcy, OIT plans to continue offering free labor on Gateway warranty repairs to OHIO students, faculty and staff.

Board of Trustees approves $30M bond issue for SIS and NextGen network upgrade projects

January 23, 2009 - The Board of Trustees has approved the issuance of up to $30 million in bonds to fund the university's implementation of a new Student Information System (SIS) and a next generation network upgrade.

Zanesville campus upgrades network, joins central Active Directory

January 23, 2009 - The Zanesville campus recently expanded network storage for its faculty and staff, implemented cross-campus resource sharing, improved its ability to maintain lab computers, and deployed a brand new wired network, all while reducing administrative overhead.
