Residence Hall Wired Network to Require Device Registration

To provide a safer and more robust network at Ohio University, the Office of Information Technology plans to begin requiring registration of all devices connected to the residence hall wired network in the coming months.
The registration process will detect new devices automatically and require users to open a web browser and enter their Oak ID and password the first time they try to access the Internet from that device. “If you have ever logged into the OHIO wireless network, then this should feel familiar,” notes project manager Ken Bailey.
Unlike the wireless network, which requires users to log in with their Oak ID and password before each session, wired network registration only will require authentication the first time a device appears on the residence hall wired network, with quarterly renewals.
OIT will pilot the new service in the coming weeks, first on its own internal networks, then in Hoover House. If those pilots are successful, the service will begin expanding to the rest of the university’s residence hall network over Spring Break. Individuals in affected buildings will receive advance email notice before the service goes live.
