Residence Hall Network Registration OIT currently is investigating the possibility of requiring device registration for the residence hall wired network. Once this policy goes into effect, any device connected to the wired network will need to be registered to an individual Oak ID before that device will be allowed to access the Internet.
What has to be registered Any device that uses the wired network must be registered. This includes but is not limited to: - desktop computers
- notebooks/tablets
- printers or print servers that plug directly into a network jack
- Printers that are shared over the network but which are attached directly to a computer do not need to be registered. Only stand-alone printers that connect directly to a network jack need to be registered.
- game consoles

University owned computers If your room has a university owned computer in it, you should not have to register that machine. If you do receive a registration page on a university owned computer, call the Service Desk at 740-593-1222. Back to top
How to register - Connect your device to a wired network port
- Open a web browser and attempt to load a page (any page will do)
- When prompted, enter your Oak ID and password
If your device does not include a web browser, please contact the Service Desk at 740-593-1222 to discuss your options.

Implementation schedule Original plans were to enable this service first in Hoover near the end of February '08 with the rest of the residence halls following over Spring Break. Based on beta testing results, we have postponed enabling the service. More information should be available by late April '08. Back to top
Devices without web browsers If you have a device that requires wired Internet access but which is not capable of browsing the Web, please contact the Service Desk at 740-593-1222 to discuss alternate registration options.

Taking responsibility When you register a device, you are taking responsibility for the use of that device on our network. Be careful about sharing or loaning a registered device to others. Should someone use your device to violate university policy or the law, that activity will be associated with your Oak ID. Back to top
Guests and visitors If you are hosting a visitor who needs to connect a device to the wired network, you will need to register that person's computer under your own Oak ID. Please note that by doing so, you are taking responsibility for that person's use of our network. Back to top
