This page is being rededicated to the current projects of SLO. All these projects need volunteers, so if you are even slightly interested, email one of the directors and just ask! They'll be more than happy you showed some interest!
1. Screening of An Inconvenient Truth: Dr. Kim Brown, the Office of Resource Conservation, the Sierra Student Coalition, and of course, the Sustainable Living Organization are hosting a screening of Al Gore's movie and a discussion of global climate change. We need people, period. We need them to come on Thursday at 5:00pm to Walter 145 to help set up, greet people as they come in, staff the SLO table, get people to sign the petition to reduce the university's energy usage, watch the movie, ask questions after the movie to start the discussion, staff the table after the movie, talk with people about your experiences with climate change, and eat the left over refreshments. Interested? contact SLO at sustlivorg[at]ohio.edu
2. Light it Up Right- The three residence halls that lost the Residence Hall Challenge last year on each green (Wilson on west, Bryan of east, and Crawford on south) were chosen for this project. Teams of volunteers are going door to door, exchanging CFLs for incandescent light bulbs. The residents are also asked to sign a pledge/petition saying that they will reduce their energy usage and they want to university administration to do the same. Directors- Laura Allen (la110605[at]ohio.edu) and Jonathan McKenzie (jm275005[at]ohio.edu)
3. Dorm Recipes- A cookbook of seasonal recipes that use ingredients from the farmers market that the students can prepare in their residence hall is being compiled. Biographies of some farmers from the market are in the process of being added and in the future, new recipes will be added as new ingredients become available. Once the cookbook is finished, volunteers will put on demonstrations in the dorms. Directors- Amanda Annis (aa276306[at]ohio.edu) and Nick Stanich (ns233903[at]ohio.edu)
4. Adopt-A-Game- Pairs of students run around the stands of sports games during time outs and half time and take people's trash and recyclables. This increases the amount of recyclables returned and is a major help to Ed Newman and the planet. Usually the group decides a date that they are going to adopt a game, and lots of people come. Major perks include a free, not-available-for-sale dumpster diving team t-shirt, free pizza, and getting to watch a game. All around a good deal. Director- SLO group (sustlivorg[at]gmail.com)
5. Selling Cheese at the Farmers Market- SLO has a partnership with Constantine of Athens Own and interested people come to the farmers market at 10 am and help with selling cheese. In return, Constantine pays us for our efforts. The money earned goes to fund other SLO activities, like field trips to the Midwest Energy Conference or Green Festival, the tentative Sustainability is Sexy Calendar, which requires quite a bit of capital, and green tags to offset our carbon emissions from our various events. Directors- SLO group and Sam Pebble (sp962204[at]ohio.edu)
