The Green Network

The Green Network is a coalition of Ohio University students, faculty and staff who are dedicated to advancing campus sustainability initiatives. Their mission is to find ways that we as a campus community can foster environmental stewardship and resource conservation. GN provides an opportunity to expand our campus sustainability efforts.

We encourage our peers to be aware of the impact of their actions and to make small changes, such as:

* Turning off lights when the room is empty
* Printing on both sides of a sheet of paper, and recycling paper that cannot be reused
* Enabling 'sleep' mode on office computers
* Turning off computers that are not in use
* Advocating the purchase of energy-efficient office equipment

These are small changes at the individual level. Taken together, the effect is enormous. Not only are we lowering Ohio University's utility and waste bills - thereby freeing up funds for other priorities - but we are also reducing greenhouse gas emissions from power plants that provide Ohio University with electricity.

The Sierra Student Coalition

The Sierra Student Coalition is the nation's largest student-led environmental group. The SSC is the student arm of the Sierra Club, the nation's largest and oldest grassroots environmental organization (founded in 1892!). The mission of the Sierra Student Coalition is to empower youth to organize effective, tangible victories and develop the future leaders of the environmental movement. To that end we offer resources and support, including trainings and campaigns, to a national network of local communities of young environmental activists to assist them in running strategic grassroots organizing efforts that influence environmental policy and alter public attitudes.

Graduate Student Balances Beauty and Sustainability

Compass, 7/13/11

By Kate Sierzputowski

Kylie Johnson does feats of balancing that would make a Cirque du Soleil acrobat jealous.

The Ohio University graduate student is working toward a master's degree in environmental studies; is a graduate assistant in the Office of Sustainability; maintains her skills as a classically trained violinist; lives green as an Ecohouse resident, and on top of it all, she is a multiple pageant-winning beauty queen.

It is this balance that landed her this year’s Ya-Ya Sisters Style Award, awarded to Johnson last month at the 2011 Miss Ohio pageant. This award is given to the candidate who best embodies poise and style on and off the pageant stage. . .
