Program will feature speakers, workshops and projects dealing with environmental justice
Highlights About Environmental Justice
  • Erik Reece, author of "Lost Mountain"
  • Jeff Goodell, author of "Big Coal"

The Environmental Justice movement attempts to address the disproportionate environmental risks that are borne by poor communities and communities of color.

Attentive people have noticed that a disproportionate number of waste handling facilities (dumps, sewage plants, reprocessing plants, consolidation stations), industrial facilities that emit toxics (refineries, plastics manufacturers, foundries, etc.) and similarly dangerous neighbors are sited in communities of color and low-income communities.

Global warming also impacts human lives; particularly people of color, low-income families, and indigenous communities. It compromises their health and causes unjust financial burdens and social and cultural disruptions. Moreover, those who are most affected are least responsible for the greenhouse gas emissions that cause the problem; both globally and within the United States. This pattern is called "environmental racism." Environmental justice is the remedy (adapted from Ecology Center and Redefining Progress).
