Why ‘Bold & Uncensored?’

Environmentalism has undergone a metamorphosis- a change rather fitting for a movement strongly grounded in evolutionary trends, the shifting role of humanity within the context of the planet, and the cyclical rise and fall of natural systems.

The American environmental movement has many possible birth dates. Was it Thoreau's pilgrimage to Walden Pond? Congress' decision to establish Yellowstone as the world's first national park? The publication of Silent Spring in 1962? Was it the very first Earth Day, celebrated thirty-nine years ago? Or did it rise from ecological disasters like Love Canal, Three Mile Island, and Chernobyl? Perhaps it goes back even further- to the first sips from a mountain spring or the first time our ancestors were stopped in their tracks by a breathtaking vista.

These Earth Month speakers and events are intended to give a fresh perspective on aspects of environmentalism that are unique to our moment in history. This year’s Earth Month theme, Bold & Uncensored: Not Your Mama's Environmental Movement refers to the ideas, individuals and developments that set us apart from generations past. Our mamas didn't talk about sustainability in the South Bronx. Our mamas didn't listen to evangelical reasons for respecting nature. Our mamas also didn't live in a world so uncomfortably close to climate thresholds that wrapping Arctic glaciers in reflective blankets was seriously considered as a strategy to combat climate change. And they certainly didn't use blogs to write about the 9 billion people who will soon be living on this planet.

Though grounded in a long-established movement, our generation's approach to sustainability is worlds apart from the literal and figurative environment of our elders. Bold and Uncensored is an acknowledgement of our responsibility, our unique challenges, and our unprecedented opportunity.

9 Billion People + 1 Planet = ?

Andrew C. Revkin, New York Times
For the first time in its history, the human species has both become a planet-scale force and become aware of that fact. Spikes in population and resource appetites have been sustained by technology and fossil fuels -- so far. But with an estimated 9 million people living on the planet by 2050, the road to a stable, prospering human population is highly uncertain.

Revkin, a prize-winning author and environmental reporter for The New York Times, explores how people are, and aren't, working to smooth the path, from the Arctic to the Amazon to the White House.

A symposium led by guests Petia Morozov of Columbia University and Iain Kerr of the Maine College of Art will address the way memory

A film screening of 'The Real Dirt on Farmer John' and discussion about local and organic agriculture. The film provokes discussion about the source of our food, the threat of dwindling American farmland, and the difficulty of small farms in competing with large-scale agriculture. Discussion following the film will be led by Sarah Conley of the Athens Farmers Market.

Food, Inc.

How much do we really know about the food we buy at our local supermarkets and serve to our families?

In Food, Inc., filmmaker Robert Kenner lifts the veil on our nation's food industry, exposing the highly mechanized underbelly that's been hidden from the American consumer with the consent of our government's regulatory agencies, USDA & FDA.
Featuring Eric Schlosser (Fast Food Nation), Michael Pollan (The Omnivore's Dilemma), and other forward-thinking social entrepreneurs, Food, Inc. reveals surprising -- and often schocking -- truths about what we eat, how it's produced, who we have become as a nation and where we are going from here. Sharing Paradise
Director: Amelia Hapsari 60 min. U.S.A.

Above the water, Balobaloang looks like an ideal tropical paradise with blue sky, coconut trees, and crystal water. However, another picture is revealed under the water, where coral reef is destroyed and fewer and fewer pristine habitats exist. Traditionally, people who live in small islands in Indonesia fish using sustainable fishing methods. This has allowed marine resources to be conserved and to be shared by the inhabitants of the islands. However, dynamite and cyanide fishing has introduced another kind of economy. The cargo ship owners, who receive revenue from transporting goods from one island to another, are supposed to offer loans or jobs to others who have less income. However, corruption and a high overseas demand of fish have made it impossible for traditional fishermen to receive a fair share of their paradise. Collaborating with the fishermen, the filmmakers confront the perpetrators and attempt to understand the reasons for these dangerous new methods that threaten Balobaloang's sustainable way of life.

This is the final film in the Southeast Asian Stories series.
