Sonia Marcus
Sustainability Coordinator marcuss@ohio.edu Sonia was born and raised in Manhattan though she is now a big fan of small town sustainable living in Southeast Ohio. Becoming the sustainability coordinator in 2006 was a dream come true for Sonia, who had come to Ohio University from Senegal in 2003 to pursue a graduate degree in Communication & Development Studies. Biggest pet peeve? When people leave the A/C running in their office after they've gone home for the day. Aargh!
Erin Katherine Sykes ee293007@ohio.edu
Erin just graduated from the College of Education with a Master's Degree in Cultural Studies. She knew she cared about the environment when she began diving after roommates' recyclables in the garbage. After two years working in the office, she realizes there is SO MUCH MORE to saving the planet than just recycling and has gotten particularly interested in climate change education. She also loves outdoor adventures, so you might run into her biking, hiking, or jogging around SE Ohio!
Kim is pursuing a master's degree in Environmental Studies with a research focus on sustainability. Originally from Yorktown, VA, she came to study in Athens from New York City when she saw how much garbage a city of 8 million people could produce and realized that she wanted a hand in affecting the policies that would reduce and divert the results of our consumer culture. Small-town Athens has shown her what a sustainable community can look like and she hopes to work to implement city policies elsewhere that will spread these practices. She is also an avid runner and an aspiring locavore.
Lori is pursuing her Master of Science in Environmental Studies. Her involvement in the environmental cause started back in high school when the 20th anniversary of Earth Day initiated an Earth Club. Her interests grew from recycling efforts to espousing the ideals of sustainability. Her interests include chasing flying discs on the Ultimate field, gardening, commuting around town on her bike and enjoying a good meal.
Mike is a 2nd year MFA student in the School of Film. Prior to working for the OU Office of Sustainability, he worked for Westminster Choir
College's Talbott Library where he helped them to launch their own
sustainability campaign. He also holds his Ph.D. in American Literature, his research dealing with William Faulkner and Film.
