Dear Students,
It is with regret that I share with you the news that Ohio University senior Kelly Armbruster and Hocking College student Chris Theil were found dead early Saturday morning off campus at Riverpark Towers apartments by the Athens Police Department. On behalf of the university community, our hearts go out to the students’ families and friends who are dealing with this tragedy.
The Athens Police Department investigation is ongoing and we may not have full information about the incident for four- to six weeks. However, in a statement released today, Captain Tom Pyle of Athens Police assured us that, “if we had thought there was any immediate threat to the public, we would have put out an alert. There were no obvious signs of foul play.”
As more information becomes available, we will be sure to communicate it to you through the students’ web-site at www.ohio.edu/students and the Student Affairs web-site at www.ohio.edu/studentaffairs.
Staff in the division of Student Affairs has reached out and offered support to Kelly’s family and friends during this difficult time.
As always emotional support and grief counseling is available. If you or others are in need of support, I encourage you to make use of the variety of services offered through Counseling and Psychological Services at 593-1616, the Dean of Students Office at 593-1800, or the Ohio University Police Department at 593-1911.
Sincerely,
Kent J. Smith, Jr., Ph.D. Vice President for Student Affairs smithk1@ohio.edu
