Shopping for a Landlord
Finding the right landlord is every bit as important as finding the right house or apartment. Having a bad landlord can mean having a bad living experience off campus. Here are some tips for finding the right landlord:
1. Go to the Code Enforcement Office Located on 28 Curran Drive, they will let you see all records regarding the house/apartment you are looking at-- just give them the address of the property! Beware if there are a lot of Code violations! Their phone number is 592-3306 and their website address is http://ci.athens.oh.us/Text/CodeT/codet.html
2. Schedule an appointment with the Center for Student Advocacy Our office can assist you in making an educated decision. Our attorneys have assisted many students in tenant/landlord disputes and will be able to guide you in the right direction.
3. Talk to former and current tenants This is your best source of information about the landlord. Ask about their experiences.
4. Check out the City of Athens' Rental List This list is in alphabetical order by street and tells you which addresses are rentals and who are the owners. The web address is http://www.ci.athens.oh.us/Code/Rental_Housing/rental_housing.html
