What Is Tutoring?
Tutoring can provide you with an opportunity to gain a more individualized learning experience. Working with a student or professional tutor can help you to improve your academic performance within a subject area, and learn valuable study skills that can help you in all of your classes.
Student and professional tutors work with students individually or in small groups. All Ohio University Southern students are eligible for up to two hours of tutoring per week, at no cost. In addition, Drop-In Tutoring is available for OUS students during specified hours.
OUS tutors are students that have achieved a minimum of a 3.0 cumulative grade point average, and have earned at least a “B” in the subjects they are tutoring. Tutors receive training and have the primary goal of helping students achieve academic independence. The Learning and Assessment Center also employs some professional tutors to work with students.
The majority of tutoring is provided for 100 and 200 level courses. Upper level students can usually make arrangements with their instructors for the help they need. Tutor availability is not guaranteed for any class, however every effort will be made to ensure that a student is paired with a tutor upon request.
To request a tutor, come to The Learning and Assessment Center (or the main office at the Proctorville campus) and complete a Tutor Request Form. After receiving your completed form, The Learning and Assessment Center staff will give your contact information to a qualified tutor who will contact you personally to set up an initial tutoring session.
Tutors are available so that students can "drop in" for assistance with specific questions or problems.
In Ironton, tutors will be in The Learning and Assessment Center, which is located in Room 214 in the Collins Building (the old MITS Lab). In Proctorville, tutors are located in classrooms at the Eastern Lawrence County Center.
Tutoring will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Tutors may need to limit the time they spend with each student, depending on the number of students waiting for assistance.
Drop-In Tutoring is FREE for all Ohio University Southern students.
