Ohio Front Door > Student Organizations
There are over 360 registered student organizations at Ohio University, including clubs, sororities, fraternities, and student chapters of professional organizations. Many of them have web pages.
Ohio University does not control the contents of any of these organizational web pages.
The organizations linked were registered with the office of Campus Life and had home pages conforming to the requirements specified in the discussion of creating a site, below.
Creating Your Organization's Web Site
Choosing a Server Ohio University provides accounts for recognized student organizations on four servers:
- For existing or new accounts on the new Static-Page Front Door server, please send E-mail to webteam@ohio.edu; specify the URL for existing accounts, and the full name of the organization for new accounts.
The primary advantage of this server is that you can use whatever HTML constructs you directly write or the software you use to prepare the pages creates on your behalf. You can learn more about using the Static-Page Front Door server by starting at http://www.ohiou.edu/pagemasters/static/. Pages on this server are seen by the world as being on www.ohio.edu.
- For existing accounts on www.ohiou.edu, also known as the "VMS Front Door server," please send E-mail to webteam@ohio.edu; specify the URL.
You can learn more about using the VMS Front Door server by starting at http://www.ohiou.edu/pagemasters/memo85/. No new accounts are being created on this server, and all existing accounts will be migrating to the new Static-Page Front Door server, as described online. - New or continuing pagemasters for existing accounts on the CommonSpot Front Door server, and prospective pagemasters for new accounts on the CommonSpot Front Door server should send E-mail to webteam@ohio.edu; specify the URL.
The primary advantage of this server is that you will use a template-based content management system to create and update your pages, which will make it easier for your successor to maintain the site. You can learn more about using the CommonSpot Front Door server by starting at http://www.ohiou.edu/pagemasters/commonspot/. Pages on this server are also seen by the world as being on www.ohio.edu.
- For existing accounts on oak.cats.ohiou.edu, please send E-mail to oak.support@ohio.edu; specify the URL.
The primary advantage of this server is that organizational Web page publication works exactly like personal Web page publication. No new organizational accounts are being created on OAK, but existing ones will continue to function for the time being. We anticipate that the existing organizational accounts on OAK will be migrated to the new Static-Page Front Door server or possibly to the CommonSpot Front Door server later this year.
Rules Student organizations wishing to be included in the database linked from this page, and to have the Web page URL displayed and linked in the eDirectory, should send E-mail to webteam@ohio.edu, stating the name of the organization, and the complete URL of the organization's home page.
There are three absolute, no-exceptions requirements for your organization's Web page to be included in the database and displayed in the eDirectory:
-
Your pages must not use any official Ohio University logo graphic, current or outdated (including the Cutler Hall woodcut logo, the Intercollegiate Athletics Attack Cat logo, or the old OU pawprint). Such graphics are to be used on official Ohio University pages only, they must not be used on any student organization or other unofficial pages. Instructions are available on-line; see the discussion there, and in the Web Style Guide. -
Your pages must not contain any statement that they are copyright by Ohio University. - Your home page (the one we link to) must have a reciprocal link to the Ohio University Front Door page, http://www.ohio.edu/:
-
- If the page we link to is a content-free "splash" page (one that automatically loads your real home page, or on which the user must click once to proceed to your real home page) then both the splash page and your real home page must have a reciprocal link to the Front Door.
- The reciprocal link must be achieved by a method that is functional in all browsers. In particular, Javascript-based pop-up selections do not meet this requirement.
- The link to the Front Door must bring up the Front Door in the full window (replacing your entire page), not in a sub-frame, and not in a new window (nor in a new tab, for those using tabbed browsers). If you use frames on your homepage, this requires care; instructions are available on-line.
Suggestions on ways improve your Web pages can be found on-line.
If you are new to creating Web pages, you may want to contact the office of Campus Life, in Baker University Center, to sign up for the Student Organizations Pagemaster Workshop, which is two two-hour evening sessions, offered early in the quarter. You may also want to consult the on-line references.
