Microsoft Overview

University-Owned Machines:
The Microsoft Agreement paid for by Ohio University covers licenses for Office (Windows and Macintosh), upgrades to Windows operating system, and the Microsoft Visual Studio programming tools. It covers university-owned machines. The only cost involved to departments is the cost of the media (DVDs/CDs).

Faculty/Staff (Home-Use Rights):
Software is made available to you because Ohio
University has purchased license coverage for the Software through its Microsoft Campus Agreement effective July 1, 2007.  Under the Campus Agreement, you have the right to use the Software for campus-related purposes at home. You are not licensed to use the Software at home for personal purposes. You do not own the license(s) or the CDs, rather you are authorized to use the Software and associated media pursuant to the terms and conditions of the Microsoft Campus Agreement during the licensed period starting July 1, 2007 and ending June 30, 2010. You will be required to remove the Software from your home machine immediately upon expiration of the licensed period or earlier if your employment by Ohio University ends.  Home-Use Rights for Ohio University include the following product(s): Microsoft Desktop Suite (Windows 32-bit operating system upgrades, Office Professional (Windows & Mac), and CoreCAL).

Students:
The Microsoft Agreement allows Ohio University to offer licenses and media (DVDs/CDs) for Office (Windows and Macintosh) and upgrades to Windows operating system to currently enrolled students at a discounted price.  Once the license/media is purchased by the student, they own the license.

FAQs:

Q: What about Microsoft products that are not included in this agreement? Can we get them added? Or do we have to order and pay for them separately?

A: Software titles can not be added to the current agreement; however, many other Microsoft products (i.e. Visio, Project, Server licenses, etc.) that are not included in the contract can be purchased via the Microsoft "Select" program at significant discounts. This benefit is only available for university-owned machines however. Send an e-mail to sitelicenses@ohio.edu to inquire about pricing and ordering. Please include software name, version and platform (i.e. Mac or Windows).

Q: What if our department just purchased Microsoft software through an outside vendor/reseller?

A: There are no provisions for credits or refunds.

Q: How long is the Microsoft Agreement going to last?

A: The contract is in effect until June 30, 2010. Ohio University, as well as other participating universities in Ohio are evaluating jointly the effectiveness of the program and will decide whether to continue the agreement or not.
