Abstract: Recent technological advances are giving rise to a new generation of large ground-based telescopes that are changing our view of the universe in fundamental ways. Parallel developments in space-based observatories are similarly generating new astronomical discoveries at an unprecedented rate. In this talk I will summarize these efforts, and the reasons why astronomy is a now a regular feature in the national media.
Dr. Shields received his Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley, in 1991; was a postdoctoral research associate at Ohio State University in 1991 - 1993; was Hubble postdoctoral fellow at the University of Arizona in1993 - 1996; and has been Assistant Professor at Ohio University since 1996. His research interests include quasars and active galaxies, and star formation in galaxies.
