On the evening of May 29, 1997, we were honored to have Professor Nicholas Dinos, Profeesor of Chemical Engineering, Russ College of
Engineering and Technology of Ohio University, as our featured speaker. Dennis Irwin's introduction of Professor Dinos pointed out that his longtime habit of welcoming new faculty to the College and to the University is exactly in accord with Sigma Xi's motto of "companions in zealous research."
Speaking on "Research by Degrees: Higher Education and Industry," Professor Dinos
provided a wonderful discourse on what membership
in Sigma Xi has meant to him, the state of academic science and research, the origins, in the medieval guild system, of higher education and the various degree designations, the education and work of several scientists, and
various reflections on his own education and training.
