Spring 1996 Annual Banquet
Ohio University Chapter of Sigma Xi
The Scientific Research Society
The Chapter held its annual banquet and awards ceremony on Thursday evening, May 23, 1996. The featured speaker was Dr. Norman Cohn, Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Environmental and Plant Biology. (Dr. Cohn was one of the founding members of the Ohio University Chapter.) Dr. Cohn's talk, entitled "Hot Plants are Cool," focussed on molecular biology and recent advances in genetic engineering of plants. Prior speakers at the awards banquet have included Drs. Jeannette Griselli
Brown (1993), T. Lloyd Chesnut (1994), and Roger W. Finlay (1995).
Dr. Darrell O. Huwe, long-time member and officer of the Ohio University Chapter of Sigma Xi, retired from the Ohio University faculty in July, 1996, and died on November 27, 1996, after a short illness.

1996 Promotions and Inductions
Full membership in Sigma Xi is awarded on the basis of scientific research accomplishments, and Associate membership is awarded on the basis of promise for a scientific research career. At this year's banquet, the Ohio University Chapter promoted and inducted eight individuals.
The Chapter promoted two members from Associate to Full membership:
- Dr. Mary Louise Trivett (Environmental and Plant Biology), who has been at Ohio University since 1959, and has BS, MS, and PhD degrees from Ohio University.
- Dr. R. Dennis Irwin (Electrical and Computer Engineering), who has been at Ohio University since 1987.
The Chapter inducted three new Full members:
- Dr. Winfried Just (Mathematics), who has been at Ohio University since 1990.
- Dr. G. Daniel Lassiter (Psychology), who has been at Ohio University since 1987.
- Dr. Long Zhang (Environmental and Plant Biology), who just earned the PhD at Ohio University and is now doing cancer research at Wayne State University, Detroit.
The Chapter inducted three new Associate members:
- Mr. Ryan Scott Higgins (Electrical and Computer Engineering) will soon get BS from Ohio University.
- Mr. Walter Dewey Phipps (Avionics Engineering) first came to Ohio University as student in 1966.
- Mr. David A. Quinet (Avionics Engineering) BS from Ohio University in 1984, has worked here since.
