Darrell was a long-time member and officer of the Ohio University Chapter of Sigma Xi (having served as President and Secretary-Treasurer), and was honored at the Spring, 1996, Awards Banquet. The information in the next section originally appeared as part of the Chapter's home page.

The following information is based on the obituary published by the Athens Messenger on November 29, 1996.
Dr. Huwe was born September 22, 1932, in Lemmon, SD, the son of the late Otto and Ida Olson Huwe. He attended a one-room school in Lemmon and was a graduate of Lemmon High School. He received a bachelors degree in physics with highest honors in 1954 from the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, and was in "Who's Who Among Students in American Universities."
He was an Air Force Captain, serving from 1954 to 1960, and was one of the original meteorologists at Cape Canaveral. He won the Williams Award for Air Weather Service.
He received a Ph.D. in high energy physics in 1964 from the University of California - Berkeley, and did post-doctoral work at the University of Colorado at Boulder.
He taught at Ohio University for 30 years, retiring in July, 1996. He taught at American University in Cairo in 1975-77.

Services were held Sunday afternoon, December 1, 1996, at Christ Lutheran Church, Athens, OH, with Pastor Patricia Lull officiating. Burial followed immediately at West Union Street Cemetery (including American Legion Honor Guard rifle salute and taps).
