Brother      Frank X Walker 
      Awarded the Lannan Literary Fellowship for Poetry
 




       

Bro. Walker, a native of Danville, Ky., is a poet and multidisciplinary artist who was awarded the Lannan Literary Fellowship for poetry in October of 2005. Only 153 writers and poets worldwide have received the honor since it was established in 1989 to honor emerging writers.
       
Bro. Walker is a founding member of the Affrilachian Poets, a writing group formed in the early 1990s geared to improving diversity in the writing community. The Affrilachian Poets expand through 11 states from Kentucky to New York.
      




     

Bro. Walker, in addition, is an assistant professor of English and interim director of the African/African-American studies program at Eastern Kentucky University and also is the author of three collections of poems.     How did you become interested in Sigma?: I met Carter Womack at a conference. At the time, there wasn’t a chapter of Sigmas at UK. He came to the university, and I was real impressed with some of the things he said. He was really proud of the organization, and that made me interested even more.

    Other major awards: My second book was the Lillian Smith Book Award, which goes to a writer who writes about something positive about the South. 
             
             
           

  •          

    Advice to younger Brothers: Find a way to continue investing in their community and use whatever gift that they have toward achieving that goal.
             
             
           

  •          

    Advice to older Brothers: To not give up on the younger Brothers. Don’t pass up the opportunity of being a teacher or mentor.
