not everyone has the same
version of software, and some are incompatible. We need to agree on a
single format in order to share our work. The standard for this class
is Word 2003, either in Windows or on a
Mac (the Mac version may be identified as Word 2004).
If you use Word 2007
click on the Office button (large, in the upper left corner),
then Save As, then Word 97-2003 Document
to avoid having to remember this, you can make Word always save in 2003 format
(most of the new features of 2007 don't affect ordinary documents)
click on the Office button (large, in the upper left corner), then
Word Options, then Save, then for "Save files in this format,"
select "Word 97-2003 Document"
If you use Word 2003 (XP) or earlier
for this class,
you’re in luck -- just save the file
when you are using Word 2007 in a lab or elsewhere, click on the Office button (large, in the upper left corner),
then Save As, then Word 97-2003 Document
you can avoid having to remember this by downloading
and installing a free converter in your own Word program (the OU Help Desk
at 593-1222 will give you details). This will also help you if you are
trying to open a document from someone else who has forgotten to
save in the older format.
If you use any other word processing program
click on File / Save As (or equivalent steps),
and for "Save as Type," select Rich Text Format. An
".rtf" should be added automatically to the end of the filename.
NOTE: when you look for the document to open it, you may not see
it listed. It is there! When you click on File / Open, make sure
that "Files of Type" has "All Files" selected.
