create strong passwords

An effective password is the first line of defense against intruders and if the password is complex enough, it will be the barrier to most intrusion attempts.
  • DO use a password of at least 8 characters
  • DO use a combination of letters, numbers and/or other characters
  • DO use a password that is easily remembered by you, but not easily guessed by others
  • DO use uncommon words or phrases
  • DO change your password every 60-90 days
  • DO NOT use names or initials
  • DO NOT use significant dates in your password (birthdays, anniversaries, etc)
  • DO NOT use any part of your social security number
  • DO NOT write down your password, anywhere, ESPECIALLY near your computer or work area.

To use many of Ohio University’s web-based services, you must provide an OAK ID and password. It is recommended that, due to the frequent use and importance of your OAK ID, you change your password regularly. A good suggestion is to change your password every school quarter.

To change your OAK password:

  1. Go to: http://technology.ohio.edu/myaccount/
  2. Click on the link, “Change your Password”
  3. Enter your OAK ID and current password.
  4. Enter your new password, following the guidelines above to make a password:
  5. At least 8 characters
  6. A combination of letters, letters and/or other characters
  7. Avoid using your name, initials, SSN or birth date
  8. Click “Change OAK password”
