Since it is possible to acquire a virus before getting an update that would recognize the virus, regular system scans should be performed to ensure that your computer is free of viruses. A virus can “slip through” in spite of your best efforts. Performing virus scans is a simple task that can be automated with most antivirus programs. When a virus scan detects a virus, the antivirus program deletes or quarantines the problem area to keep it from spreading or performing any further damage. McAfee, by default, has an “On-Access Scan” feature enabled. This feature allows the antivirus program to scan the files written to and read from your computer. Using the on-demand scanner will allow you to run the system wide scan less often. The McAfee VirusScan is a white shield-shaped icon with a blue border and a red ‘V’ in the center, if the icon has a red circle with a line through it, the On-Access Scan functionality is disabled. Right click the icon and choose “Enable On-Access Scan”
