avoid downloading malware
Malware (MALicious SoftWARE) is software that may be bundled with other, often free software applications. This software is not normally purposefully designed to harm your computer but it often does. Malware is often described as being a way to help “improve” your computing, adding some convenience to everyday tasks, such as adding a browser toolbar. This software is usually advertisement driven and often uses many resources on your computer to facilitate the advertising of a product and often causes your computer to perform very poorly or do tasks that you have not set it to do. Because of the nature of the software, many instances of malware are difficult to identify. In general, if the software you are installing is free of charge, you should be wary of installing that software. If you are concerned or unsure of the nature of the software you are using contact the Ohio University Help Desk at (740)593-1222.
