If McAfee VirusScan is installed and running on your Windows OS computer there will be a shield shaped icon on your taskbar. This icon has a blue border and red “V” in the center. If this icon is not present, McAfee VirusScan is either not installed, or not working properly. [Virex information for Mac users follows McAfee information below.]

To install McAfee Antivirus for Windows XP:

  1. Launch a web browser and go to
    http://www.ohio.edu/software/mcafee.cfm
     
  2. Click on the link labeled:
    Quick Install - Windows NT w/ SP6 or greater/2000/XP
    Enter your OAK ID and password when prompted and then save the file to a hard disk on your computer.
     
  3. After the download has completed, double-click the installer program.
      
  4. Follow the instructions during the install, agreeing to the License Agreement.
      
  5. At the end of the installation you will be given the option to update your virus definitions and perform a full system scan (do so).
       

Note: You may be asked to reboot your computer to finalize the installation process.

Install Virex for Mac OS X:

  1. Launch a web browser and go to one of the following:

    for Mac OS X 10.1 to 10.2.5:
    https://redbud.cats.ohiou.edu/downloads/Virex/virex_7.2_OSX.dmg.sitx
     

    for Mac OS X 10.2.6 or newer:
    https://redbud.cats.ohiou.edu/downloads/Virex/Virex7.7.dmg
       
  2. Enter your OAK ID and password to download the .DMG file.
      
  3. Once the file has been downloaded, mount the file by double clicking the file.
       
  4. Navigate to the Virex Image and double click “Virex.pkg”
      
  5. Click the consecutive “continue” buttons, and agree to the EULA.
       
  6. Click continue once more and then click install.
    Note: Your computer may ask for you to authenticate. Do so by entering an administrator username and password.
       
  7. Click OK at the warning to restart your computer, and then click the Restart button to restart your computer.
