Scripps College of Communication Partners with NABEF for 2013 Media Sales Institute

(ATHENS, Ohio) Wed. Nov. 14, 2012 - Ohio University’s Scripps College of Communication has been chosen as one of three universities nationwide to participate in the National Association of Broadcasters Education Foundation’s (NABEF) Media Sales Institute. The program is an intense two-week training program for recent college graduates who are interested in careers in media sales.

The Media Sales Institute (MSI) is part of NABEF’s commitment to expand diversity in radio and television broadcasting. This program helps students of diverse backgrounds begin their careers in media sales, and more importantly trains students to excel and advance in the broadcast industry. 

Scheduled for May 12–24, 2013 at Ohio University, MSI will immerse participants in learning media sales-related skills. The program has proven to be very effective for identifying and developing talented media professionals and has served as a gateway for young talented individuals of diverse backgrounds into media sales. The vision of the MSI brings together the broadcast industry, media companies and sales candidates, making it a win-win for all.

Dr. Scott Titsworth, interim dean of the Scripps College of Communication, is excited to partner with the NABEF on this project. “We feel strongly that our College benefits greatly from a robust partnership with professionals in the communication and media industry, and the Media Sales Institute is a perfect example of how such partnerships can organically emerge,” said Titsworth.  He added, “Importantly, this partnership represents a win-win for both organizations. Media professionals participating in the Institute have the opportunity to meet and recruit outstanding students who are poised to become leaders in the Industry, and our students and faculty have the chance to engage in meaningful networking with those professionals.” 

MSI sessions are taught by leading managers and sales executives from major broadcast and media-related companies and will focus on such areas as: creating integrated media campaigns, current industry trends, metrics and measurement, effective sales presentation techniques, resume building and career coaching, and communication skills for business. The program culminates with sales presentations observed by media sales recruiters, who will subsequently interview MSI participants for professional sales positions. Media companies hire more than 75 percent of the participants within one month after participation in the program.

Dr. Roger Cooper, Associate Professor in the School of Media Arts and Studies, will coordinate the program. Titsworth says he is pleased that Dr. Cooper will be leading the Institute. “His track record in forging and maintaining industry relationships makes him the perfect person to coordinate this initiative. This is a truly exciting opportunity for the University, our College, and our students,” said Titsworth.

Participants gain multiple benefits through this NABEF program. This includes full admission to the Media Sales Institute, including meals and housing (a $3,000 value); networking opportunities and career counseling; opportunities to build a peer network of media professionals; ongoing support via online professional networking and webinars; and the prestige associated with receiving the NABEF Media Sales certification.
