ITS Advisory Board establishes innovation fund
ATHENS, Ohio (Sept. 26, 2013)—A group of advisors to the J. Warren McClure School of Information Telecommunication Systems (ITS) recently set up a fund to encourage investment in innovation.
ITS School Advisory Board member and alumnus Ron Minto, BSC ’98, said the school's upcoming move into the Steven L. Schoonover Center for Communication presents a unique opportunity to think critically about the future of technology and how to integrate innovation into the learning environment for its students, the next generation of IT professionals. As a result of communication trends and discussions about the new lab space that will make up part of the students’ learning environment, a group of ITS Advisory Board members decided to establish the ITS Innovation Fund.
“Over the years, we have received feedback from alumni and friends that they were looking for new ways to support the school, and we think the ITS Innovation Fund is one of the most tangible ways to do this,” said Minto. “We must not miss the opportunity to build our ITS Labs to be as world-class as the new 3,732-square-foot Schoonover facility in which they'll reside.”
The goal of the fund is to provide predictable, recurring funding for ongoing technology and equipment needs within the school, in order to prepare students for tomorrow’s IT environment.
“For many years, the ITS Labs have been a tremendously effective tool in our curriculum. What a tremendous competitive advantage in the job market it has been for our students to have touched, with their own two hands, the technology they will be expected to design, implement, manage, operate, or even sell, in their first job,” Minto said.
