Thirteen students earn NAB media sales certificates at Ohio University

Thirteen earn NAB media sales certificates at Ohio University

ATHENS, Ohio (May 28, 2014)—Thirteen participants attended the second annual Media Sales Institute (MSI) at Ohio University May 11-23. On May 22, they were awarded National Association of Broadcasters Education Foundation (NABEF) Media Sales certificates after completing the twelve-day course. 

Two of the thirteen students hailed from Ohio University, while others came from Indiana University, Baldwin Wallace University, Ball State, Bowling Green, the University of Akron, John Carroll University, Eastern Kentucky and West Florida University. Roger Cooper, program director and School of Media Arts and Studies professor, said the group worked hard and played hard. 

“This is a particularly strong group of MSI students,” said Cooper. “They work extremely hard in an intensive program and yet we have a lot of fun. Graduates interested in sales are naturally an outgoing, extroverted group, and I'm particularly struck by how they support each other through this intensive process.”

Jaymes Romanofski, of Orlando, Fla., said he jumped at the chance to attend after being out of school for a year and still looking for a job in the industry. 

“I wanted to gain experience and further certification in the industry,” he said, adding that he learned about the opportunity at an NAB job fair. “I’ve learned how to sell on multiple levels: to sell myself, products and stations; and also to create a product that works for the client.”

The training program is part of NABEF’s commitment to expand diversity in radio and television broadcasting. The program helps students to begin their careers in media sales and to advance within the broadcast industry. This is the second year that Ohio University has been chosen to host the Institute, and there are three other hosts across the country. 

“We’re very fortunate to have the MSI at Ohio University,” Cooper said. “Support from alumnus Perry Sook and Nexstar makes this program possible at OU, and Im very grateful to Perry and fellow alumnus Tim Busch, Executive VP and COO of Nexstar, who interviewed every MSI student, and gave the keynote address during our graduation ceremony.”

The program features presentations from professionals in every area of the industry, professional development opportunities, interview training and job search tips.

Participant Serena Baek, who will complete her degree in Communication and Culture with minors in marketing and apparel merchandising later this summer, the MSI experience actually changed her career goals. 

“The program is good for connecting with professionals in the industry,” she said. “It took us step by step through how media sales work. I wanted to go into advertising, but I think this program is convincing me that media sales might be a better fit.”

The program concluded with presentations and then interviews with media representatives. Cooper said the participants’ bonds were noticeable through the process. 

“Following presentations to local companies observed by recruiting companies, the students were congratulating each other and high-fiving, which told me they weren't in 'competition' as much as motivated to make each other better,” he said. “That was particularly rewarding to see. The MSI Program is proving to be an excellent avenue for aspiring sales professionals to develop skills to enter the industry."
