Scripps welcomes first-year students to campus
By Kerry Tuttle
ATHENS, Ohio (Aug. 27, 2013)—Approximately 430 first-year Ohio University students attended the Scripps College of Communication Welcome Weekend event held in Memorial Auditorium on the main campus in Athens this past Saturday.
Dean Scott Titsworth opened the welcome event by talking about the power of anticipation. In his remarks, Titsworth explained to the first-year students that they should anticipate and look forward to events that will happen to them in their future while still focusing on being excellent at the projects and opportunities that immediately confront them.
"The power of anticipation will serve you well as you set goals for yourself," said Titsworth, "but don't overlook the day-to-day opportunities and challenges because you are waiting for a future that's not here yet. Approach everything you do with an expectation of excellence."
Students learned about opportunities at the Scripps College event, as well as at a Campus Involvement Fair that was held the following day on College Green and featured more than 400 different organizations on campus.
According to Associate Dean for Student Success Beth Novak, “The overarching theme of the day was getting involved.”
The first day of fall semester classes was Monday, Aug. 26. This marks Ohio University’s second year on the semester calendar.
