The 2013 Innovation Awards gala attracted more than 225 participants from southeastern Ohio on Tuesday, March 18, 2014 at the Ohio University Baker Center Ballroom. The Innovation Awards feature six categories, which recognize excellence in women, faculty, student, social and green innovation, as well as the entrepreneur of the year.

Athens, Ohio inventor and entrepreneur William Beale was named the 2013 recipient of the Konneker Medal for Commercialization and Entrepreneurship. He is a former faculty member in the Russ College of Engineering and Technology and founder of Sunpower.
Gerardine Botte, Ohio University Russ Professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, received the Outstanding Faculty Innovation Award for her work on a coal-to-graphene process.
Unable to attend the event in person, Michelle Greenfield recorded an acceptance speech for the Outstanding Woman in Innovation award. Greenfield, owner of Third Sun Solar of Athens, Ohio, was recognized for her achievements in the solar energy industry.
Scott Nykl, who recently earned a doctoral degree from Ohio University's Russ College of Engineering and Technology, accepts the Outstanding Student Innovation award, which he and current doctoral student Chad Mourning received for a 3D aircraft visualization technology.
Sean Jones of QuickLoadz Container Mover Systems of The Plains, Ohio, accepts the Entrepreneur of the Year award.
