2013 Innovation Awards: PHOTOS 

The 2013 Innovation Awards gala attracted more than 225 participants from southeastern Ohio on Tuesday, March 18, 2014 at the Ohio University Baker Center Ballroom. Seven individuals received Innovation Awards, and the 2013 Konneker Medal for Commercialization and Entrepreneurship was awarded to William Beale. All photos courtesy of Sway the Crowd Productions. 

Innovation Awards

The Innovation Awards feature six categories, which recognize excellence in women, faculty, student, social and green innovation, as well as the entrepreneur of the year. 

Roderick J. McDavis

Ohio University President Roderick J. McDavis offers highlights of university and regional successes in technology commercialization and business startups. 

Lynn Gellermann

Lynn Gellermann, executive director of TechGROWTH Ohio, shows off an object created by Ohio University's new 3D printer, which is available for university and regional business use. The "Snoo" was made to promote a guest lecture by Reddit co-founder Alex Ohanian in February. 

Innovation Awards

The second annual Innovation Awards drew more than 225 guests from across southeastern Ohio. The Klinder Quartet of Ohio University graduate students performed during the dinner. 

William Beale

Athens, Ohio inventor and entrepreneur William Beale was named the 2013 recipient of the Konneker Medal for Commercialization and Entrepreneurship. He is a former faculty member in the Russ College of Engineering and Technology and founder of Sunpower. 

Botte_web

Gerardine Botte, Ohio University Russ Professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, received the Outstanding Faculty Innovation Award for her work on a coal-to-graphene process.

Michelle Greenfield

Unable to attend the event in person, Michelle Greenfield recorded an acceptance speech for the Outstanding Woman in Innovation award. Greenfield, owner of Third Sun Solar of Athens, Ohio, was recognized for her achievements in the solar energy industry. 

Scott Nykl

Scott Nykl, who recently earned a doctoral degree from Ohio University's Russ College of Engineering and Technology, accepts the Outstanding Student Innovation award, which he and current doctoral student Chad Mourning received for a 3D aircraft visualization technology.

Sean Jones

Sean Jones of QuickLoadz Container Mover Systems of The Plains, Ohio, accepts the Entrepreneur of the Year award.
