Student Expo announces 2012 award recipients

May 7, 2012

Judges at the 2012 Student Research and Creative Activity Expo selected 145 students in 64 sessions for awards Thursday. Winning project topics included overcoming performance anxiety in the fine arts, factors that influence invasive plant germination, how spouses affect smoking cessation efforts and storm water management for the transportation industry.

More than 600 undergraduate, graduate and medical students and postdoctoral fellows participated in the annual event, which showcases original student research, scholarship and creative activity. Students may choose to have their project evaluated by a panel of faculty and staff judges.

First-place winners received a $200 prize and second-place winners received $100. In some sessions, judges awarded a joint first-place prize of $150 for each student.

Several Ohio University units sponsor special awards at the Expo each year. The Edison Biotechnology Institute, Voinovich School of Leadership and Public Affairs, Appalachian Rural Health Institute and Regional Campuses judge and award prizes for presentations eligible in those categories. The Friends of the Libraries offers four awards for students who have made exceptional use of library resources.

In addition, Sigma Xi and the Center for Entrepreneurship offered special sessions for students who are members of the scientific society and who pitched new business ideas, respectively. They will announce their award recipients separately this week.
