Campus Responds

2001 Student Affairs University United Writing Project

To all of mankind, worldwide:
The tragedy this week has mysteriously brought people of the United States back together. Suddenly, we are all on the same side and though it may not last forever, it should make an imprint on our lives and understanding of mankind as a whole. The world should stand together in strength for the future of mankind. Stand strong does not mean strong against another force, only strong and just simply on the spirit of humankind. My mother will surely say these words of mine are young and idealistic and that she sounded the same way at my age. Nevertheless, I believe these things to be true, only maybe so lost that they seem strange to us.

-- Tricia Wertz, student

As I watched the images of the infamous planes crashing into the WTC, (an image now permanently seared into the American consciousness) I found myself saying, "God, I know you're in control. I just cannot see how this horrible loss of 5,000 lives can produce anything positive." In the week since, I have seen my nation come together in a way that I only thought possible in movies. I have seen stereotypes about Americans, and particularly New Yorkers, demolished as they have given selflessly of their time, talents, money and even their blood for the relief effort. Lastly and perhaps most encouraging, I have seen the people of America re-kindle their faith. With this faith, we will endure and even grow stronger. God, bless America.

-- Brooke Allyson Williams, student

I pray that what was meant for evil God will turn it around and use it for good. May the United States be UNITED in love. May the countries of the world see that we all need to work together to make the world a peaceful place to live. God bless the United States of America!

-- Patricia Ercolino, community member

This is a time for the United States to reflect on its role in the international community. We rarely have been victimized; most countries in this world have known major victimization. Maybe this is an opportunity for better understanding, for closer reconciliation with our neighbors outside our borders.

-- Danny Moates, faculty member

L'Espoir
C'est choquant
C'est sombre, et triste.
C'est un tragedie devasrtatice
Pour tout le monde.
A notre avis,
Ce n'est pas juste
Pour les familles.
Bon courage.
