Planned Events

The following activities are planned to commemorate the events of September 11, 2001. They have been planned by a committee of Ohio University students, faculty, and staff and representatives of the Athens community. All events are open to the public. Additional events, planned by student organizations, community groups, University departments and others, are listed below.

Reflections Online
Individuals are invited to post online their thoughts and feelings about September 11.

September 9-11

Commemorative Quilts
Members of the University and Athens communities will be invited to express themselves on one of six "quilts" at locations on campus and in Athens. Each participant will be allotted a one square foot section of fabric to express personal thoughts and feelings about the events of September 11th. Drawings, names of those affected, and other artistic representations are invited; all are encouraged to participate regardless of artistic talent and all materials will be provided.

The quilts will be displayed at West Portico of Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium as part of the commemoration event planned for September 11, 2002 at 6 p.m. (see below). This is a project of University Program Council (UPC) with support from the Department of Residence Life, the City of Athens, and the Athens County Prosecutor's Office. Ribbon Distribution
Ohio University's Student Senate will distribute white ribbons at the College Gate at the corner of Court and Union Sts. with white representing hope for the future. For further information, contact Student Senate at 740.593.4050.

September 11

Tolling of Bells
Bells at local churches and at Ohio University's Cutler Hall will toll at 8:46 a.m., 9:43 a.m., and 10:48 a.m. These are the times that hijacked airliners crashed in New York City, Washington, DC, and Pennsylvania, respectively.

Individual Reflection
Houses of worship across will be open for individual prayer and reflection throughout day as will the Helen Mauck Galbreath Chapel on the Ohio University campus.

Television Viewing of News Coverage
Large screen television viewing of news coverage of commemorative events occurring around the country will be available in the Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium throughout the day and evening.

A 9/11 Commemoration: Remember, Honor & Hope
Beginning at 6 p.m at the West Portico of Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium, a program of music and word will be offered to commemorate the events of September 11, 2001. The event will seek to remember those who lost their lives, to honor those who provided service in response to the tragedy, and to promote a sense of hope for the future. Candlelight Vigil
Following the evening's national telecast of commemorative events from New York City, a candlelight vigil will be held on the University's College Green (at the West Portico of Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium).

Additional September 11 Activities

Memorial Service
Athens County Office Holders will conduct a memorial service to remember all of those persons who lost their lives during last year's terrorist attacks. The service will be held in front of the Athens County Courthouse from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, September 11, 2002, and will broadcast live on 970 WATH. For information, contact the Office of the Athens County Prosecuting Attorney at 740.592.3208.

Essays Invited
The Athens News is inviting essays from readers for possible publication. Essays should be 300-500 words and should reflect the writer's perspectives on September 11, 2001 and its aftermath. Essays should be submitted to the Athens News, 14. N. Court St., Athens, news@athensnews.com. Selected essays will be published in the September 9 edition of the newspaper.

Candlelight Vigil for All Victims of Violence & Terrorism
People for Peace and Justice will hold a candlelight vigil for all victims of terrorism at 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, September 11, 2002 at the Athens County Courthouse. In addition, all are invited to join the same day in a day of fasting.

Meeting for Worship and Meditation
The Athens Friends (Quaker) Meeting House will host a meeting for worship and meditation on 9/11. The meeting will be held at 22 Birge Dr, Chauncey, from 7 - 8 p.m. on September 11, 2002. Child care will be provided

September 20-21

Making Sense of September 11: News Media, Old Metaphors
A conference and workshop, Friday and Saturday, September 20-21, 2002 at the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism, Ohio University, Athens, Ohio. For more information about the event, contact conference organizers:
