For a revision, please provide a copy of the last updated printed version of the publication with corrections clearly marked—provided that the corrections are no more than a word or two per paragraph. If the changes are more extensive, make them on a per-paragraph basis. In the copy of the previous publication that you submit, x-out or highlight the paragraph with the correction and submit the complete paragraph containing the correction on diskette or Zip disk, as mentioned in the section, "Preparing Files."

All manuscripts submitted to University Publications are reviewed for clarity, grammar, punctuation, accuracy of general university information, and consistency of style, following the Ohio University publication, "Editorial Style Guide." Hard copies of this guide may be obtained by calling us at 740-593-1920. The goal is to assure that your message is clear, nonrepetitive, easy to read, accurate, and effective. You may be contacted to clear up questions about information in the manuscript.

You will be shown an edited copy of your manuscript for approval before design of the publication is begun. This is your final opportunity to make extensive changes to your manuscript. Additions or changes later will extend the time needed to produce your publication.

After your manuscript has been approved, it is turned over to the graphic designer assigned to the project. Using the information that you provide at your initial meeting, the designer will complete a proposed layout of your publication for your approval. This concept will take into consideration the audience for the publication, quantity, and the funds and time available for the production of the publication. The layout will indicate the proposed size, format, any photography or illustrations used, and the ink colors and paper stock. It will also conform to university graphic standards in the use of the university logo and other elements.

This concept layout will be sent to you for your approval. It is your responsibility to check the accuracy of dates, addresses, names, fees, and other information. You should mark any corrections on the proof and return it to us. We do not accept corrections over the phone or by e-mail. If you make a substantial number of changes to this final proof, you may see an additional one. However, changes late in a publication’s production schedule may affect the deadline.

All communications about your publication after the initial meeting should begin with the director, 740-593-1920, and not the graphic designer assigned to your project.

University Publications has access to images that may fulfill the requirements of your publication. Many of these photographs were taken for a specific purpose and may not precisely meet your needs, however. In that case you can order photographs taken especially for your publication through the university photographer, 740-593-2565. The cost of this photography is for materials only. A freelance photographer also may be hired; in this case, however, you may incur costs for time, materials, travel, etc. Selection of a photographer and subsequent art direction should be made in consultation with a member of the staff in University Publications.

The graphic designers in University Publications can provide simple maps and other illustrations. More complicated or time-consuming illustrations must be commissioned from outside sources, which we will contract on your behalf. You will need to allocate additional funds to pay for their work.
