Dear Ohio University Faculty and Staff:

The purpose of my message is to reiterate our continuing efforts to reduce spending universitywide. As you know, we implemented a hiring freeze throughout the University in September 2008, and suspended all non-essential travel. Since that time, many academic and academic support units have implemented additional savings measures, such as restricting capital expenditures and reducing discretionary spending.

The hiring freeze is still in effect and nonessential travel and purchases remain halted. Requests for exceptions to the hiring freeze should be submitted to my office using the Essential Position Request form (MS Word document).

In light of the continuing economic downturn and its negative effect on investment income along with the uncertainty about the state's next biennial budget, I am asking you to continue to look for ways to conserve resources.

As I mentioned in my budget update message last week, the University's budget development work over the past several months has been difficult for all of us. It has required intense efforts to find ways to preserve our focus on students and academics through reduction of administrative costs. 

If you have additional ideas for ways we can further strengthen our operations, please share those thoughts with representatives of Budget Planning Council, planning unit managers, or your academic dean or division leader. I believe that we will make it through these tough fiscal times and our efforts today will go a long way in helping us emerge as a stronger university community for the long term.
