RE: Commitment to Collegiality
In light of the recent passage by the Faculty Senate of a resolution calling for the organization of a collective bargaining unit, I would like to share with you some thoughts on this important issue.
I respect the rights of faculty to consider the question of unionization. However, this is one of the most significant issues to be decided on our campus in many years and the implications of a faculty union should be carefully evaluated by all concerned. I agree with those faculty members who have stated that this decision should be made on the basis of data and objective information about the costs as well as the benefits of unionization. Important considerations include the scope of the issues that are likely to be addressed in a collective bargaining agreement, the effect that a union would have on the Faculty Senate, and the impact a union would have on the relationship between individual faculty members and their chairs and deans.
A faculty union would bring about many changes in our university and the culture of our institution. A union would impact the perception of Ohio University in the higher education community. In this regard, outside observers will look not only at the final results of the collective bargaining election but will pay careful attention to how we conduct ourselves in the weeks ahead.
We are a community of scholars. Scholars often disagree and energetic debate is a common feature of campus life. But this debate should be conducted in a respectful manner and on the basis of accurate factual information.
All of us share a common commitment to the education of our students, to scholarly excellence, and to the proud history and promising future of Ohio University. I will work with you to promote an informed discussion on collective bargaining. In the coming weeks, we will share information with you that may be helpful as you make this very important decision. Whatever your choice, I am confident that we can work together to continue to serve the best interests of our university community.
