President's letter to the Cleveland Plain Dealer Date: Oct. 3, 2006
To the Editor:
Your Oct. 6 editorial about Ohio University asked, “What is going on in Athens?” Here’s the answer:
We welcomed the two largest freshman classes in recent history in 2005 and 2006, and applications for 2007 are up strongly.
We developed a strategic plan for enhancing education, research, diversity, and fiscal resources.
We strengthened our finances, closed a $9.3 million deficit and freed up $6.4 million to strengthen academics.
We received the two largest gifts ever, $15 million from the Scripps Howard Foundation and $10 million from the Osteopathic Heritage Foundation.
We improved access with our Urban Scholars and Appalachian Scholars programs and our partnership with Kent State University.
We lead the state in the number of students winning nationally-competitive awards such as the Fulbright.
We took action to reduce high-risk drinking.
We are home to a nationally-ranked women’s volleyball team and many outstanding academic programs, including National Resource Centers in African and Southeast Asian studies.
Yes, we face some significant challenges but the sky is not falling. With the efforts of alumni, faculty, staff, students and parents, we are solving our problems and continue to deliver exceptional education opportunities.
Cordially,
Roderick J. McDavis President
