Vision Ohio: The Strategic Plan

President's letter to the NY Times
Date: Oct. 3, 2006

To the Editor,

Re: Ohio University Tries to Get Past Problems, but New Ones Emerge (Sept. 27, 2006).

Your recent article on Ohio University contained factual errors:

  • Contrary to your report, Ohio University is fiscally sound. Last year we eliminated our projected deficit, thus making $6.4 million available to invest in our top priorities undergraduate education, graduate education and research, and the faculty.

  • At 110th, we are in the top half of U.S. News & World Report’s list of the best 249 American universities.

  • The Scripps Howard Foundation committed $15 million to our newly named Scripps College of Communication, which comprises five schools, including the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism.

  • The university’s enrollment is 28,287 on its six campuses, 11,587 more than the Times reported.

  • New strategies to combat high-risk drinking were announced in May and went into effect at the start of this fall quarter, not in November 2005.

Ohio University provides exceptional educational opportunities. High rankings, sound fiscal health, and strong enrollment are testaments to our success.
