Graduate Certificate Programs

MA students in Political Science have the opportunity to earn a graduate certificate in Women's Studies or Contemporary History along with their degree.

Certificate in Women's Studies

The requirements for a graduate certificate in Women's Studies are WS 589 the New Scholarship on Women and three other approved courses for a total of at least 17 credit hours. Only one of these courses can be in your major. Because graduate students in Political Science are allowed to count up to 15 credit hours of relevant course work in other departments toward the 50 hours required for the MA, it is possible to earn the certificate in Women's Studies with little or no additional coursework in Political Science.

A complete list of courses that satisfy the certificate requirement is available in the Graduate Catalog. Applicable courses in Political Science are:

  • 519 Gay and Lesbian Politics
  • 520 Women, Law, and Politics
  • 578 Feminist Political Theories
  • 521 Politics of Law and Sexuality

Certificate in Contemporary History

This interdisciplinary certificate is designed for a select number of graduate students in Political Science, History, Journalism, and Economics. To earn the certificate, you must be accepted for the program by the Contemporary History Institute, take the thesis option for a MA in Political Science and complete the following five hour courses beginning in the fall quarter:

  • CH 601 Introduction to Contemporary History
  • CH 602 Issues and Sources in Contemporary History
  • CH 603 Applications of Contemporary History
  • CH 604 Tutorial in Contemporary History

Since three of these courses can be counted toward the fulfillment of the 50 hours required for the MA in Political Science, the Contemporary History certificate requires one additional course beyond the 50 credit minimum required for the MA.

The Contemporary History Institute has funds available to provide fellowships for some of its participants. To be considered for a fellowship, inform the Graduate Director by February 15 of your interest in the certificate program for the following fall quarter.
