I.   Overview

This policy promotes the public health of the academic community, and provides for medical care of students.

II.   Prematriculation Immunizations

Students living in Ohio University residence housing must submit evidence to the Department of Residential Housing demonstrating that they have received the Hepatitis B and Meningitis vaccination.

Students are encouraged to submit a list of immunizations they have received for documentation in their student health service medical record.

III.   Tuberculosis Testing

International students, except Canadians, new to the Athens Campus or re-enrolling after an absence of two or more years must be evaluated for active tuberculosis by means of a tuberculin skin test (Mantoux) administered by student health personnel as soon as possible after entrance to the university.

All positive skin test reactors will undergo a chest x-ray, Quantiferon blood testing, or other procedure approved by the Student Health Medical Director for evaluation of active tuberculosis. If a student does not complete this requirement, his or her university account will be placed on Hold.

Referral to a treatment program will be recommended to positive reactors.

IV.   Health Insurance

All international students enrolled for one (1) or more credit hours on the Athens campus and all domestic students enrolled for five (5) or more credit hours on the Athens campus must be covered by a health insurance plan. Students on the regional campuses who wish to enroll in the student insurance plan negotiated by Ohio University must contact the insurance carrier directly. They will not be automatically enrolled.

All international students enrolled for one (1) or more hours on the Athens campus will be enrolled automatically in a health care insurance program. They may not waive this insurance coverage.

All domestic students enrolled for five (5) or more hours on the Athens campus will be enrolled automatically in a health care insurance program. They may waive this insurance coverage online after registering for classes.

V.   Eligibility for Service

People in the following categories are eligible for the medical services at student health services located within Hudson Health Center:

A.   Students

Any student who is registered for the current academic term; or has preregistered or intends to enroll for the following academic term; or during the summer is beginning or continuing a graduate studies program in the Fall academic term, even if as yet unregistered. This includes students enrolled on the Athens campus and on any of the regional campuses.

B.   Event Attendees

Anyone on campus attending special Ohio University programs, such as workshops, conferences, etc., for which a health fee has been paid.

C.   Exceptions

Any other eligibility will be determined by the Student Health Medical Director.

VI.   Confirmation of Eligibility

Except in case of a medical emergency, a reasonable attempt will be made to confirm membership in one of the above-mentioned categories before medical services are provided.
