Purpose

This policy serves to establish an orderly and efficient mechanism to ensure that all appropriate suggestions for names for Ohio University buildings are given due consideration.


Policy

Buildings will be named by the Board of Trustees, after recommendation by the President.

In those instances where private contributions have been received for construction or renovation of a building, consideration for naming the building will be given to those donors who have contributed 50% or more to the cost. University buildings may also be named for individuals in recognition of outstanding service or merit.


Procedures

The Vice President for University Advancement will be responsible for maintaining a listing of potential names for University buildings, along with brief biographical and background information for each name. Suggestions from University faculty and staff should first be channeled through the appropriate Executive Officer; suggestions from University Trustees should be made to the President; suggestions from all other individuals, including alumni and community members should be made directly to the Vice President for University Advancement.

To accommodate the Trustees' policy of naming original regional campus buildings for historical persons, and of seeking recommendations from the regional campus advisory councils, the Vice President for Regional Higher Education will submit such recommendations to the Vice President for University Advancement.

The Vice President for University Advancement will periodically submit the accumulated list of potential building names to the Executive Officers for their review, priority listing, and classification. The University Planner will also periodically prepare and submit a list of unnamed buildings. These lists will also be presented to the President for his review, priority listing, and classification. The Executive Officers' group recommendation will be communicated to the President by the Vice President for University Advancement for a final review by the President with the Executive Officers. This process will be repeated periodically to update biographical data and to review new names.

The President's recommendation for suggested names for each unnamed building will be communicated to the Chairperson of the Board of Trustees for Board action.

Proposed revisions of this policy should be reviewed by:

  1. Policy and Procedure Review Committee

  2. The Executive Officers of the University.
