Scope and Function

The Graduate Council coordinates all advanced degree programs at Ohio University. Members of the Graduate Council are appointed by the Committee on Committees, with the approval of the President of the University, and on the advice of the Associate Provost for Graduate and Research Programs. The composition of the Graduate Council should achieve an adequate representation of both those departments granting Ph.D.'s and those departments offering only Masters degrees. Members of the Graduate Council are selected on the basis of demonstrated academic achievement. Much of the work of the Graduate Council is carried on in its subcommittees: The Fellowship Board; the Contract Student Grievance Board; the Policies and Regulations subcommittee; and the G.A. Responsibilities and Stipends, Admission Requirements subcommittee.

The Graduate Council has both advisory and policy-recommending responsibilities. The Graduate Council initiates general policy for graduate programs and recommends the initiation, implementation, and, if necessary, the elimination of graduate degree programs at Ohio University.

The Graduate Council may consider with, and advise, the Associate Provost for Graduate and Research Programs on subjects of concern to graduate education at Ohio University as requested.
