Course Philosophy: This course is designed to prepare future music educators with
the abilities to teach the euphonium and tuba to students ranging from elementary
to high school. Over the next ten weeks, emphasis will be given to basic pedagogical
concepts, ability to perform on these instruments at a novice level, and appropriate
resources and materials that are available and have been proven useful.

Attendance Policy: Each student has five weeks to acquire the previously mentioned
objectives on each instrument. Since we meet only twice a week, attendance cannot be
compensated. Two absences are allowed for the quarter. Additional absences will be
granted under special circumstances and may affect the final evaluation by one letter
grade. Tardiness is also a hindrance to all parties involved and also will be reflected in
the final evaluation. Students are responsible for obtaining materials and subject matter
missed in class.

Required Text: The Art of Tuba & Euphonium by Harvey Phillips and William Winkle
Class Website ( http://oak.cats.ohiou.edu/~smithj10)
The required text and the website will serve as the resources for the class. There will be
additional resources suggested and required throughout the quarter(recommended articles, websites, and texts). Information for accessing such resources will be clearly
provided in class or on the website.
