First day Student Assessment Exercise

week 2

Rhythm/Melody Practice Examples: First, work on recognizing the rhythmic groupings with each example, then go back and do the pitch--use solfege rather than worrying about the key/starting pitch/, etc. Examples 1-4 are in compound meter and Examples 5-9 in simple meter.

Diatonic Harmonies: Emphasis readily recognizing chord quality and function FIRST and dictation SECOND. First, use the exercise link to view the file w/o the solutions, then listen to the Mp3 to determine the chord quality, function, and then dictate the inner voices that are missing. Once you feel confident, then view the solution.

NEW Harmony Examples using chromatic/modulatory chords (posted 1/21/09) under week 3 below

Supplemental Work:

One absolute method for improving sight reading (a.k.a. recognizing rhythmic groupings quickly) is to PRACTICE performing rhythms alone. Practice the following two rhythm sheets with a metronome by counting out loud and either clapping ....using your instrument on a given pitch). When you can perform these sheets perfectly, without ANY mishaps, then your rhythm is/should be on another level. (This is cake for Brett!).

Even mostly everyone has expressed that dictation is the primary area that they feel is the weakest area, getting some additional solfege practice can prove helpful and interesting. Visit the following sites to help with this.
