November 17, 1998

The final exam will be at the officially scheduled time, 12:20 PM to 2:20 PM on Thursday, November 19, 1998, in Copeland 014.

November 12, 1998 The study session will be 7 - 10 PM on Wednesday, November 18, in Copeland 101. The current draft of the final exam study guide is available on-line. My comments on business process reengineering are also available on-line.

November 9, 1998

As announced in class, by E-mail to our LISTSERV, and on the syllabus, the fourth project presentations will be split between Tuesday, November 10, and Thursday, November 12, in order to comply with the College of Business standard procedure for student evaluations of the course.

Attendance will be taken both days. If you will be late or absent, please be sure to notify me in advance.

To steal a graphic image, follow the directions that are on-line

To use the graphic image, once you have the file in your HTML folder, make a tag like this:

<IMG SRC="image.jpg">
There are other attributes beside the source file name, such as height, width, and alternate text, but they are not necessary for presentation use.

Please do not use <BLINK> tags or animated graphics in your HTML for your presentations.

Finding information for your projects:

The Wall Street Journal will routinely carry more than a dozen stories each week that are directly related to this course.

You should not restrict your research to the on-line resources listed on the Web page for each project. In particular, you should also do the following:

You should follow links from those pages.

You should use the key words and phrases that you learn from those pages with one or more of the search engines that can be found from the Libraries' Web pages

A few comments about your papers:

The marks I make on your term papers deserve a few explanatory comments:

A check mark is good

An OK is less enthusiastic

A line through the words or an X crossing them out is disagreement, either of fact or of wording.

A question mark usually means either that I didn't follow your reasoning or that I doubt your statement.

The length of the paper, 4 to 8 pages, as stated in the syllabus, refers to the text of the paper, it does not include the cover page, nor the bibliography (endnotes).

A couple of points for presentations:

I have prepared a starting file for your use in preparing your HTML file for the slide show for your presentation.

Minimize Netscape, insert your floppy disk, and double-click on the desktop icon "Short cut to 3.5in. floppy".

If it is not formatted, you will be given the opportunity to do so.

Re-open Netscape, click on the link to the template (above).

Choose "Save As..." from the File menu.

Navigate to the floppy disk and then into the appropriate folder.

Choose a DOS-legal file name and type it in.

Make sure that the file is being saved as HTML (or "Source" format).

Save the file.

Use the "Open File" choice from Netscape's File menu to verify.

I have prepared a Web page on giving a technical talk.

You should plan your presentation for a duration of 3 to 5 minutes. There are 10 groups and 110 minutes of class time, but we must plan to lose at least 5 minutes at the start, and it will take at least 90 seconds to remove the prior group's floppy disk, insert the next one, open the file, and take a deep breath.

You will be "gonged" after 6 minutes. Do plan ahead, practicing enough to know what you can include. Do not let yourself rush or "speed-talk" - there is a real risk that you will simply forget to breathe, or that you will hyperventilate. The solid oak podium in our room has a narrow base, and if you grab onto it when you pass out, it will come smashing down on you. (This is not a hypothetical speculation, it has been experimentally confirmed!) If you are nervous, sit on a chair (we will borrow a tall chair from the help desk for this purpose).

When presenting, look at the monitor, not at the screen, so that you will continue to face your audience.

Use nested HTML lists.

You might want to look at my summary of tips for using Netscape to do your presentation.

As some of you have already discovered, the version of Netscape in the Copeland 014 lab will print only one frame of a frames-based Web page. To select which frame to print, just click in the frame. Nothing visible will happen, but the printout will be of the frame most recently clicked in.

If you want to save a copy of a graphic image on a Web page you are viewing, modern versions of Netscape will happily do this for you:

Windows Netscape

Place the mouse over the image.

Click the right mouse button and observe that a menu pops up.

Select "Save this image as..."

Navigate to the disk and folder where you want the image to be saved. Change the filename if you want to.

Macintosh Netscape

Place the mouse over the image.

Click and hold the button down until a menu pops up.

Select "Save this image as..."

Navigate to the disk and folder where you want the image to be saved. Change the filename if you want to.
